Are you looking for a simple and effective way to improve your health and increase your lifespan? Look no further than taking at least 7000 steps a day. A recent study conducted by the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study found that taking at least 7000 steps a day is associated with a significantly lower risk of premature all-cause mortality among both Black and White men and women.
In this cohort study of Black and White middle-aged women and men, higher daily steps were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. Adults taking at least 7000 steps a day, compared with those taking fewer than 7000 steps a day, had approximately 50% to 70% lower risk of mortality. Adults taking at least 10000 steps a day, had more than 70% lower risk of mortality. Taking more than 10 000 steps a day was not associated with further reduction in mortality risk. The findings support those of previous studies, suggesting that increasing steps per day among the least active portion of the population may provide mortality benefit.
Studies of steps and mortality often lack diversity. The CARDIA study offers a unique opportunity to study the potential interaction of race and sex with the association of steps and mortality. They did not observe statistically significant interactions by sex or race.
So, why is taking 7000 steps a day so important for our health?
Regular physical activity has numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. It also helps to improve mental health and cognitive function, as well as maintain a healthy weight.
The good news is that taking 7000 steps a day doesn’t have to mean going to the gym or running marathons. It can be as simple as taking a brisk walk after lunch, going for a hike on the weekends, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. The key is to find physical activities that you enjoy and make them a regular part of your routine.
In conclusion, taking at least 7000 steps a day is a simple and effective way to improve your health and increase your lifespan.
So, get moving and start taking those steps today! Your body will thank you.
